Here it is - the Beermats Puzzle

Disc 1 C&VG side Disc 1 Codea side

The images that you see on the right are of the first Beermat/Disc - one for the front and one for the back. The central images reflect my appreciation for the creation/publication of the puzzle by James Dalgety and C&VG magazine (Future Publishing) and not forgetting my tool of choice - CODEA for its resolution.

The Beermat/Disc images are provided in a couple of downloads for you if you wish to cut out the Discs and fold them (as described earlier) to give a double sided Disc that can be used to help resolve the puzzle - or to just use to solve the puzzle directly without the use of a computer.

In order to solve the puzzle you will need to arrange the discs in a square so that the disc faces make contact with two other discs. Diagrams of arrangements are given below. To solve the puzzle you need to check on each and every configuration at the connecting faces slooking for mirror images.

Here are the possible configurations

Configuration 1 Configuration 2

Further information/hints may be provided on the Codea forum later. A solution will be published with the best code examples and the early code examples when the challenge has been deemed complete.

The math involved shows that there are 393,216 permutations (that's 16x48x32x16) so it does involve quite a bit of computation. With todays technology that should still only be counted in seconds to complete.

Good Luck, if you need any other help just drop a post on the forum.
